How to Make the 4th of July Toilet Paper Roll Rocket Craft

    Gather your supplies

See the above list for all the required materials to make this craft.

    supplies for the firework craft

Add decorative paper to the rocket’s body

Choose the color and type of paper you want to design your rocket.

Cut out a rectangle. The length of this rectangle should match the height of your toilet roll. Ensure the rectangle’s width extends beyond the roll’s circumference.

Wrap the paper around the rocket and tape it to the roll with double-sided tape. I taped the paper to the rocket inside and then taped the paper together on the outside. If you have any excess paper sticking out on the ends, you can fold it inside the roll.

If you opt not to use paper to decorate your rocket, you may paint or color the roll with markers or paint pens.

    Make the Rocket’s Top

Cut out a 3-5 inch circle from the paper, depending on how big you want the top to be. I traced a circle onto the back of the paper using a ribbon roll as a “template.”

Cut a slit halfway through the circle. Gently twist it into a cone shape and tape it together. Add glue around the top of your rocket and place the rocket’s cap on top. Let it dry.

    Add the Fuse and Flames

Glue or tape the fuse and flames to the inside bottom of the roll on opposite sides.

If you don’t have the picks or tinsel for the flames, you can cut small strips of streamers or colored paper to make them and tape them along the bottom of the rocket.

    Tutorial FAQs

This craft is ideal for preschoolers and elementary school-aged children ages 4 to 8. However, with some modifications and appropriate supervision, it can also be a fun project for younger toddlers and even older kids.

Absolutely! You might want to do the cutting and assembling for younger children, allowing them to focus on the decorating aspects of the craft. You can encourage older kids to add more detail to their rockets or make a fleet of different sizes.

There are many ways to add educational value to this craft. You could teach your child about the history of the 4th of July, explain why we use fireworks to celebrate, or even introduce basic concepts of how rockets work. You can also incorporate counting and color recognition for younger children.

Feel free to substitute with what you have on hand. For instance, you can paint the toilet paper roll if you don’t have scrapbook paper. You can also wrap the rocket in regular printer paper and use markers, crayons, or stickers to give it some patriotic flair!
